The Men’s Performance & Vitality Series

Evidence-based insights from Dr. G -- 40+ years helping men optimize their health, performance, and longevity.

About this series

Over more than four decades, I’ve had the privilege of caring for thousands of men, including business leaders, entrepreneurs, executives, and professional athletes. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that most men aren’t looking for shortcuts—they simply want to feel and perform at their best.

In this series, I’ll share practical, evidence-based insights drawn from both medical science and real-world clinical experience to help you better understand your body, improve your performance, and take charge of your long-term health.

Most men don’t wake up one morning and suddenly low energy and poor performance.

Instead, the changes happen gradually. You have low energy than you used to. Your workouts performance don’t produce the same results. You gain weight more easily, especially around your waist. Recovery takes longer. Sex becomes less spontaneous, and your confidence may begin to slip.

Many men one 40 assume this is simply part of getting older.

While aging is inevitable, feeling older before your time shouldn’t be ignored. These changes are often your body’s way of signaling that something beneath the surface deserves attention.

It’s Usually Not Just One Problem

One of the biggest misconceptions about men’s health is that there is a single cause for declining performance.

In reality, several factors often work together. Hormonal changes, loss of muscle, poor sleep, chronic stress, excess body fat, metabolic health, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions can all contribute to the way you feel.

That’s why simply taking a supplement—or even testosterone—without understanding the whole picture may not deliver the results you’re hoping for.

Muscle: One of the Best Predictors of Healthy Aging

Beginning around age 30 to 40, adults lose approximately 3–8% of their muscle mass per decade, and the rate of loss accelerates after age 60. This gradual loss of muscle, known as sarcopenia, is about much more than appearance.

Healthy muscle helps regulate metabolism, supports healthy blood sugar, improves balance and mobility, protects against falls, and contributes to energy, strength, and independence. Research has consistently shown that muscle strength is one of the strongest predictors of future health, disability, and longevity.

Protecting your muscle may be one of the most important investments you make in your future health.

Low Energy and Poor Performance Often Share the Same Roots

Many men think fatigue and sexual performance are two separate problems.

They’re often not.

Poor sleep, chronic stress, excess body fat, reduced physical activity, metabolic dysfunction, and changes in hormone levels can affect both your energy during the day and your confidence in the bedroom.

In fact, erectile dysfunction can sometimes be an early sign of underlying cardiovascular disease, making it important to look beyond the symptom itself rather than simply masking it.

For Low Energy and Poor Performance Lifestyle Still Matters More Than Any Pill

There is no medication that completely replaces healthy daily habits.

Regular resistance training, adequate protein, quality sleep, stress management, and maintaining a healthy weight remain the foundation of long-term health and performance.

The goal isn’t simply to live longer—it’s to feel stronger, think more clearly, recover faster, and maintain your quality of life for years to come.

Strong men exercise for performance, longevity, energy, strength, sexual health.

What You Can Do Starting Today

You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight. Small, consistent changes often produce meaningful results.

Here are a few evidence-based strategies:

  • Strength train 2–4 times per week to preserve muscle, improve metabolism, and maintain physical performance.

  • Prioritize protein to support muscle maintenance and recovery.

  • Improve your sleep and actively manage stress, both of which influence hormones, recovery, and energy.

  • Maintain a healthy body weight, particularly around the waist, to support metabolic and cardiovascular health.

  • Consider evidence-based supplements. Depending on your individual needs, supplements such as creatine monohydrate, HMB (β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate), and magnesium may help support muscle health, strength, recovery, and overall performance. They work best as part of a healthy lifestyle—not as a replacement for one.

  • Get properly evaluated. Persistent fatigue, declining strength, low libido, or bedroom performance concerns deserve more than guesswork.

The Bottom Line

Growing older is inevitable. Feeling weaker, more tired, and less like yourself isn’t always.

Many of the changes men experience after 40 have identifiable—and often treatable—contributing factors. The key is not to assume they’re simply “part of aging,” but to understand what’s driving them and develop a personalized plan to address them.

A Personal Note from Dr. G.

During more than four decades of practicing medicine, I’ve had the privilege of caring for thousands of men from all walks of life—from busy executives and business owners to professional athletes and retirees.

One thing I’ve learned is that most men don’t come to see me because of a laboratory number. They come because they no longer feel like themselves.

The good news is that many of the issues affecting energy, strength, vitality, and bedroom performance can often be improved when we take the time to look for the underlying causes instead of simply treating symptoms.

If you’ve noticed these changes in yourself, don’t ignore them or assume they’re just part of getting older. Start by understanding what’s really going on. That first step can make all the difference.
